re: Ibsen said, "There must be a troll in what I write." Art, today, encompasses the dream postponed into anything-goes. Justified in letting the artist descend into mediocrity, spiraling around an ego put upon a pedestal. As if, all that a person does is art. And it is. But I have no time for it. I agree with Harold Bloom in a recent interview. He asked, would you want just anyone to do surgery on you? Of course not. You want someone to know what they are doing before they cut into you. Yet today we look at the arts as if everything is the fine craftsmanship of a great artist, and much of it isn't. Until you become yourself what benefit can you be to others? Mediocrity appeals to the mass, and it appeals to the mass ego. And though it may be art, it is not the exceptional dream, enchanting the child, like a kiss walking home to my knowledge, in an unformulated illustration which wakes me up.

Well said, lt us not forget the eye of the beholder however.
And by all means be careful who you vote for this year, expression may become a thing of the past at the going rate.

It's sill to tryn define art i think, it is a highly personal thing and no one can say that one thing isn't art because the person who created it may have put that much soul and feeling into it, that to them it is art, and others may see it as that too. it's undefinable... in my opinion neywas!

Personal perception. I don't think any two individuals see Visual Arts in the same manner. What is Art? Surely Art is everything and everything is Art? Understanding one's self is an Art. Music, Writing, Sport, technology, Exploratiion, Surgery......anything.
Except Politics!

I don’t really think that art can be directly defined. It’s too broad of a question. We as a society would never come up with an answer that could be agreed upon. So many people have so many different opinions on what it is. I do not believe that giving it a concrete definition that help anyone, much less push our society forward. Art is about 6.3 billion different things to 6.3 billion different people. When forced with this question I can only say that the answer is one you have to find out for yourself.

Art is an object of expression that reflects the vision, thoughts and feelings of the artist. Art should also have some form of value based on the opinions or beliefs of the artist and community standards in which it is created.

To me art can be almost anything; it is an expression that is being relayed through the piece of work (art). I believe art is like beauty, it's in the eye of the beholder. What is art to some isn't to others. Although most people probably couldn’t give a real definition of art, this gives us a lot of freedom when it comes to looking at, enjoying, or creating art.

Personally, Art is anything that gives someone some type of emotional response. I say anything because Art can not only be a paintaing, but a dance or even a beautiful floral arrangement.
Here is an excellent definition of Art written by Claes Oldenburg:
art is a universal language,
art is an opportunity,
art is as old as people,
art is a way that people express themselves,
art is a way to connect imagination and materials,
art adds new dimensions to our world,
art invites us to think in new ways,
art gives hope and opens possibilities,
art can lift us above the ordinary,
art has power to open windows on the world,
art is all around us

Art to me is an expressions of oneself through creativity. Art is what you leave behind to be remembered by. It can be a painting, a poem. or even grafitti. Art is in the eye of the beholder. It can not be challenged because art is abstract.

Art is a form of expression that is a reflection of the artists’ imagination, beliefs, emotions, and vision. There is no single definition that can encompass the meaning of art. It is a representation of the artist and is interpreted according to cultural, religious, and intellectual perceptions. What a piece of art means to one person, may not mean the same thing to another. The meaning and messages that are conveyed through art are completely interpretive and our responses to it are based on perception of the meaning of the work.
